Daddy and Daughter Day

I can firmly say that yesterday was a good day. We will put that one in the win column. Afterall it didn’t start great. I wake up thinking about how I had doubled our monthly commitment for car payments after trading in cars that were perfect for our family. While our financial situation has changed we still have to be careful with money and even more so as we need to keep separate what is ours and what is the family’s.

Now as to why yesterday was a good day. When I was dropping my daughter off at school she told me she wanted a daddy and daughter day so I told her that later that day we’d go get her the new shoes she needs. It turned out I had to pick up some prescriptions anyway and that formed the perfect opportunity for a daddy and daughter day.

With my daughter in tow we headed out to Wal-Mart for her to get new shoes and for me to pick up some prescription strength face cream for razor bumps that have grown significantly worse over the last couple years.

My daughter is what you would call headstrong. She is the boss of wherever she is, and will let everyone know that. She demanded that we have a cart despite the fact that we weren’t buying anything that necessitated us having a cart. She also has a way of charming anyone around her. So the people at the pharmacy were greatly amused with her pushing the cart into the displays and insisting that I needed new eyeglass cleaning wipes for my eye glasses.

After much amusement in the pharmacy and with my new face cream in hand we proceeded to find her shows. She wanted princess shoes, and still wanted to push the cart. I did my best to keep one hand on it to keep her from running into people and displays but wasn’t always successful.

Eventually we made it to the shoes and the first thing she did was find a pair of pink cowboy boots for mommy. I told her they were neither mommy’s style or size but she really wanted to get them for mommy. I was able to talk her down and it was time to find her princess shoes.

After much looking and her rejecting nearly every shoe they had because they weren’t princess shoes or didn’t have the right princess on them she settled on some light up star shoes because they would make her sparkle and shine.

At this time she was still running the cart into everything and I told her if she let me push the cart she could have a toy. This was immediately a mistake as she found a sowing machine for eight and up year-olds and wanted it. I told her it was for older kids and she told me she would do it very well. I told her we’d add it to the birthday list but please let’s get a more age appropriate and less expensive toy today.

This less expensive and more age appropriate toy turned out to be a color reveal Barbie doll. Which made her very happy and earned me the status of best daddy ever which I have since lost as I am trying to finish writing this while she waits for me to unlock the TV so she can watch her favorite YouTube famfluencers, whom I have grown to strongly dislike.

Either way I will take yesterday as a victory. Even if the moments are fleeting they are terrific when they happen.
