After my daughter’s incessant playing of the Barbie Girl song and my finally listening to the lyrics of said song it was a bit relaxing to spend an evening with the boys. Now that evening was at baseball practice and as co-coach I have been making sure they end up in separate groups as Windsor decides to dig for dinosaur bones and make sand angels on the field instead of always paying attention while Roland is much more focused and ready to play.
The funny thing about Windsor is here is a kid that can do front flips off the couch arm rest and outrun every other player on the team for a ball but when it comes time to run around the bases he turns into a space cadet. I love the boy and if I could figure out how to get him to focus he’d be pretty good at a lot of things.
I’ve started to tell people that we have a rule follower (Roland), a rule breaker (Windsor), and a rule maker (Abigail) when it comes to their personalities. As far as baseball last night they both tried hard. Windsor finally threw the ball like I knew he could but it happened to be to a teammate instead of me. I’m not complaining. If the boys want to play catch and Windsor wants to make a friend I’m not going to stop him. His new friend just happens to be a kid that is either just under the age cut off for this level or the next Bryce Harper.
I’m not kidding about that. The last thing you expect when coaching the hybrid tee-ball/coach pitch league is for a kid to show up wearing a Perfect Game pull-over and a phiten necklace. Last week this boy had a big looping swing and couldn’t make contact and this week the loop was gone and he had the bat speed and bat to ball skills of a low A player. Rocketed a couple liners past my face in the outfield too. Hopefully none of the kids get in front of a ball he hits in our remaining games but this kid is ready for a new level.
All the kids on the team are great and practice and games have been fun. The best part yesterday wasn’t being a coach. It was being a dad. As we were leaving the boys told me this was the best day ever. I am glad but today is a trip to a Commanders season ticket holder event at Busch Gardens and I hope that is slightly better than baseball practice.
