Fun With Music

I’ve always loved music, and it is fun to watch my children start to develop their own tastes, even if it means listening to the Barbie Girl song or Steve’s Lava Chicken 700 times in a row. I remember being young when my musical taste started to develop. I can’t say exactly when I started to want to listen to certain artists but I remember my father giving me his walkman with a Little Richard tape, and I remember listening to MC Hammer and other pop acts when they first came out.

I also remember being in Waxie Maxie’s in Springfield and asking my mother to buy me the cassette of Metallica’s Kill ’em All and her telling me not right now. It wasn’t much later that I was listening to Ride the Lightning on the way to Chuck E Cheese in the back of her car.

There aren’t any discman or walkman anymore. The spellcheck doesn’t even recognize walkman as a word. Now these kids are walking around with their tablets listening to the Spotify. Our kids aren’t old enough for that yet. They are in the stage of asking the Alexa to play whatever is on their mind and while Abigail likes Sabrina Carpenter and Chapelle Roan she doesn’t know them by name. She calls them all Barbie songs.

On the other hand the boys call ever 90’s and 2000’s alternative act the Foo Fighters. They enjoy the Foo Fighters but are now constantly asking for monster truck songs and when I try and pull a trick like putting on Thunderstruck they demand visual proof of a monster truck existing with that name.

The good thing about Steve’s Lava Chicken is it should lead them to listening to Tenacious D which will hopefully lead straight to Black Sabbath, and we can all torture mom together with a little Paranoid.
