We Have the Technology We Choose Not to Use It

People talk about nerves feeling like butterflies in the stomach. Mine feel like worms in the guts. Little creepy crawlies tearing up my digestive track. It isn’t pleasant or fun and why I am writing this at 4:30 in the morning.

I did it again. I saw the path forward and I took it. Technology has reached a point where businesses like mine can offer things to customers with ease that hasn’t been possibly before, but that still doesn’t make it easy. Yesterday I decided to start a Shopify shop so that we can eventually add pet products to out website. Ones specifically with the idea in minds of helping pet parents to build the connection with their pets and to help with enrichment for those pets.

Things like puzzle toys, treat training bags, leashes, and cat toys. Little things like that. The issue I am having is two fold. One is there is more upfront cost than I expected. It is a whole $8 for the trail period but that last three days and then the real cost begin, and if I can’t offset that I can’t throw good money after bad and I will have to pull the plug quickly on this idea.

At this point it already feels like another mistake in what feels like an entire life of making mistakes. Which brings us to the other issue. I do not find the Shopify set-up to be intuitive at all. It is frustrating and drives me nuts. I added products to the site and they should show up after a couple minutes and nothing is there but place holders. The backend and the front end don’t appear to be connected, and I am not a computer programmer. My level is as someone that still thinks of this as word processing.

My issue with the internet right now is the existence of Wix. I remember getting a Wix website for our business and being told how stupid we were. We were told that so many times I eventually switched to WordPress and ever since it has felt like a huge uphill battle and we still aren’t back to where we were with the Wix website. We aren’t getting the leads we used to and the WordPress website is impossible for any normal human to use. Wix is intuitive, simple, and designed to be used by anyone.

The technology exists for WordPress and Shopify to be that too. They just choose not to use it.
