Navigating Family Moments: From Car Wash to Poached Salmon

Yesterday was exactly what I thought it would be. I played in the backyard with my children, washed the car with one of them, and then took another cruising around the neighborhood because he missed out on washing the car. There is something nice about driving through the neighborhood in a freshly washed car with your windows down blasting Bohemian Rhapsody. I can’t say my son understood the importance of this moment or what memories he will bring into the future but I do hope I am giving him good ones.

After our cruising through the neighborhood we ventured down to the fish market to pick up some salmon for dinner. My son has told me he likes fish but only salmon. I poached the salmon to a perfect rare in white wine, water, olive oil, thyme, parsley, salt, and garlic powder. It was light and delicious and the center had that perfect bright pink color of rare salmon.

My son didn’t like it. He told me it wasn’t real salmon and I cooked it wrong. Turns out he prefers his salmon to be pan seared and well-done, but this was such a fine piece of salmon that I had to treat it better than that. It deserved a lighter touch and I believe I did right by the quality of the fish by not torturing it in a pan, but lightly poaching it instead.

At one point during the day I did lose my patience with my family. Being around the same people all day can be tiring. Especially when every time they get food they throw their plates on the floor when they are done eating.

Overall I would call it a good day. There was lots of family time and bedtime was surprisingly simple. Most nights we get several visits from our children. Like a parade of crazy coming down begging for food despite having just eaten not that long before bedtime and having snacked all day long.

Today looks to be another good day with family. We have church in the morning and a church event at night. In-between who knows but we will find out.
