Yesterday my children accomplished something I never did. At the end of their Kindergarten elevation ceremony they were awarded with the perfect attendance award. I never got any such award when I was in school. From the jump I was skipping school. I remember holding the thermometer under a light-bulb as far back as kindergarten to get out of school.
My children are a little different from me. They love going to school. I had my moments where I enjoyed it but organized activity just isn’t for me. I need the freedom to pursue my own interests. That was why college was such a breathe of fresh air when I reached it.
I still remember sitting in the parking lot of WSES watching the kids get their perfect attendance awards and wondering why I couldn’t simply show up every day. It is the simplest and easiest thing to do. All you have to do is be present.
There were only three kids that got the perfect attendance award yesterday and my boys represented 2/3 of that. It is amazing that they made it through the entire year without any sore throats or ear infections or even a minor cold bug, but both Lara and I have good immune systems, they haven’t missed a scheduled doctor’s appointment, and the boys have already had many types of terrifying illnesses kids get from pre-school.
They did a great job this year and I’m lucky they don’t know how to use the internet yet because they would hold this over me if they could read this. They aren’t even six yet and already more accomplished than their father. I’m in a bit of trouble if this continues.
