It is time to hit the road and that can mean only one thing, Sheetz spicey fried cheese. No, it means a weekend full of family fun and adventures. A time to enjoy life and get down to it. It is a little odd to be so excited to visit a place of death and count it as vacation.
Our annual family vacation is really a long weekend to Gettysburg, Pa. I enjoy it a lot even if a lot of the time is spent visiting family, but it is the one time my wife gets to see her family each year. It is also a time I get to walk along a battlefield where a whole mess of people died and call it a vacation.
I stand on the hill, Cemetery Ridge, every year and wonder why Pickett’s Charge was ordered. The book Killer Angles makes it sound like as foolhardy an endeavor as it appears when standing on that hill. Confederate troops charged a mile over open ground, against artillery, to attack fortified, higher ground.
It makes no sense when looking at it at the surface. Some people excuse Lee by saying he didn’t know and his information was the Union troops would fortify the flanks leaving the middle open for his charge, but it is still a charge against artillery and higher ground. It really is one of the dumbest and most desperate military maneuvers in history.
Anyway, I plan on having fun this weekend. Finding that pizza arcade again, eating ice cream, and enjoying myself in general. Afterwards we will return to the doldrums of life and the worry of ever shrinking bank accounts. Trying to manage this family money is really putting a damper on things. As of yet, I haven’t figured out how to get it moving in the right direction. I will worry on Tuesday. This weekend is for vacation.
