Home Again

There is something about coming home. After vacations I am tired. I’ve been running around all week, sleeping on rock hard hotel beds with weird pillows (seriously, why don’t hotels use normal pillows), and barely getting any time to sit down.

As soon as I got home I wanted nothing more than to sit in a comfy recliner, and as I did so I had the thought, that this isn’t the type of chair you can find on vacation. We stayed in a hotel this time but even the AirBNB last year didn’t have a recliner. Vacation accommodations are not meant to be stayed in. They are places for sleeping only. Making vacation harder work than working.

How many hours a day are you active? You get up in the morning, sit down to have breakfast, sit down on your commute to work, sit in the office, drive home, and sit in your favorite chair after dinner.

On vacation you sleep in an uncomfortable bed, get up, walk or drive to breakfast, then begin the activities for that day which include some form of walking or being active or being under the hot sun, after all the activities are done you return to the hotel briefly, and then head out to dinner. It is a full day. Full in the way no working day can ever be.

Vacations always show us how much time is in the day. I know when I am on vacation I am always surprised by how many activities I can cram into one day. We go from one location to another barely getting any rest and before we know it we’re back in the hotel sleeping on a rock-hard bed.

It is fun and it shows us how all the distractions in our lives slow us down. We need to be slowed down though. Currently there isn’t a muscle in my body that doesn’t ache, my skin is dry and stretched out from being in the sun all day, and I am not sure I could take another day of vacation right now.
