Last night I watched a movie called Heretic, and while doing so I recalled that the last movie I watched was call Sinners. I found that odd that there are two recent religious horror movies out there. Then I thought harder and remembered there was another one recently about the Pope’s exorcist or something like that.
Religious horror is nothing new. The Exorcist was a movie in the 70’s and then there is that whole Dante’s Inferno thing, but it does feel like there are more and they all have the same feeling of a director or writer dealing with a personal experience. As was the case with the 2021 Netflix series Midnight Mass.
Religion can be traumatic. People come to religion seeking answers to existential questions and are often left with more questions than answers. When asked a question our Presbyterian Pastors have a favorite phrase and that is, “It’s complicated.”
Life is not full of simple answers, and if a religion purports to supply those answers it is the exact type of one that is going to leave someone traumatized.
The overall experience of Heretic was a bit confusing. Kind of like religion itself. Except it won’t spawn any followers. There are several questions I’d like answered and the answer might be in the story. That it is a movie and that is why there’s no explanation for certain plot points I can’t name without giving away massive spoilers.
That is all for this morning. I am not certain I shared one coherent thought as my brain felt very muddled this morning. Like writing through quicksand where words, phrases, and spelling all eluded me.
