The problem with your favorite football team becoming good is that a lot of their games get put into primetime. Which means if you’re traveling from Virginia Beach and have school aged children the opportunity to go isn’t there. That is why I circled the Raiders game as the one I would take the boys to. It was early in the season and a 1:00 PM game.
After this past Sunday I was in no mood to do that drive again. It wasn’t a hard drive but it was tiring and the boys aren’t exactly troopers when it comes to sitting still for hours on end. They like to move and be active. There is also the fact that the stadium is loud, you have to arrive early, and a whole host of other factors that led me to think we should wait a year or two before taking the boys.
I also didn’t expect the tickets to sell so quickly. I did list them closer to game time than any of the others and after the home opener it isn’t surprising the hype level is rising. The Washington Commanders are a very good football team, and have a chance to go far. They are going to be a popular attraction for years to come.
Still, waking up to the news that the tickets had sold and the opportunity was gone filled me with sadness. Other than random Target runs and Monster Jam I haven’t done much alone with my boys. It is all my fault and partly their age. I wasn’t into watching live sports at six years old either, and I barely remember anything from that time.
Right now the boys only interest is watching people stream Minecraft and to look at their Pokémon cards. They like Legos but either want to do it all themselves or don’t have the patience to work together to build something. Our only bonding activity is fake fighting and occasional trips to Busch Gardens.
My best moments, and worst, came at live sporting events with my father, but the vast majority of those were after I was older. I think my father had the same issues connecting with a small kid, and it wasn’t until I was in my later High School and College years that we really started to do activities together. We also didn’t have a local baseball team until 2005, and baseball is the most family friendly sport to attend.
Today should be good. Roland wants a haircut and then he’s going to help me pick out prizes for the new chores prize box. That one on one time with the kids is always good.
