We work our way through life every single day. Facing new and existing challenges. We try and do our best. Yet keep failing. Finding the only thing we can do is go on. We rise the next day and do the same thing. We might not be farms but we still endlessly march up one row and down the next completing menial task after menial task and the work day is deemed done, and then we do it all again.
Life is repetition. It is one day after the other until we reach its end, and we hope that day is distant and long to come. We fear that end, and when it starts approaching we feel its weight more and more. The end beckons us and we limp onward towards its gaping maw.
It is the pleasures in life that keep us sane. Good music, hot food, the love of a beautiful woman, and the love of family. We cannot march on without this. It is all of this that keeps us sane. Keeps us waking one day after the other. Tilling down one row and up the other. Sweating and suffering under the hot mid-day sun until the work is done. Then we go home. Enjoy time with family, go out with friends, or relax into a hobby by ourselves.
It is in these small pleasures in life where gratitude exists. They are what make life worth living. While 90% of the day is consumed by work and toil and suffering it is the 10% that keeps us marching on. That keeps us rising one day after the other until our days are done. A life worth living isn’t a life free of hardship. It is a life where the hardship is balanced by equal or greater pleasures.
The day is just beginning. Soon I will exit this house and begin the journey I call work. My journey is different from many. Today it includes grocery shopping and a meeting over coffee. Then it is all about waiting for the phone to ring. Taking phone calls and setting up new clients, and while this is less work than most it is still work.
It is the night I look forward to. When the kids are home and making their beautiful mess and filling the house with the sounds of play, and afterwards, when they are in bed. My wife and I will meet and enjoy an evening together. It might only be a short time watching TV together but it is that moment that makes all the others worth it. That joy that extinguishes all the pain.
The next day beckons and we rise to meet the sun. To set off to our modern day fields of torment to harvest leads and clients. Create social media posts, and double check all ads are functioning correctly. We serve the masters of the necessary so we may take pleasure in the extraordinary.
