Finding the Right People

It is fair to say that life has not been easy this year. Part of that is I have dealt with more people than I have in any year since I graduated college and not all of them have been on my side. I don’t think I will ever forget walking into T-Mobile with legal documents and learning that someone simply refusing to help is more powerful than any legal authority. It was also a little overwhelming to that random employee being presented with a death certificate and letter or authorization. Either way there have been helpful people this year, not so helpful people, and all the ones in between. Yesterday I found out what a difference good people can make.

I have been told on several occasions that a 1031 exchange is a difficult thing to accomplish. That it requires a ton of paperwork and extra steps and blah blah blah. All those people sounded a little lazy to me, and then I got hit with a small bit of difficulty yesterday. At the 11th hour I got an e-mail asking for a bunch of paperwork and I had none of it. What I did have was a settlement attorney, and when I told him about the e-mail at signing he was on it.

Most of this year has been spent jumping through hoops, being given the runaround, or have to complete ten extra steps to get anywhere. Suddenly there was a person that understood the situation and felt like they were on my side.

Good people make the world work. Life is hard and there are a lot of people out there that want to make it harder. It is rare finding someone that wants to make life easier. When I was a freshman in college I was put in the upper class dorm. With that being the case I couldn’t park in my dorms parking lot. I still did it when bringing groceries in or for other short periods and one day I walked out to move my car and found I was getting a ticket. I explained the situation and was met with the phrase, “Life isn’t fair,” I retorted, “This is only not fair because you’re making it so.”

People that tell you that life isn’t fair are the ones making it so, and they are the reason it is so refreshing to meet someone that helps. That smooths out the rough edges of life, is understanding, and makes life easier.
