There was a day six years ago when I was sitting next to a hospital bed searching for information about premature children. The most pressing concern was the survival rate, but after that were all the other issues that could come from being born three months early. One of those issues was being more likely to develop ADHD, and that is exactly what happened to one of the boys.
We have noticed that twins do seem to have more behavioral issues than other children and our theory is that they never get one on one attention or discipline. That every single child gets the chance to be the only baby and the focus of the family for a couple years, but twins are never the sole focus. So, we didn’t know if it was a twin thing, a preemie thing, or ADHD. That is why we went to the doctor and got an official diagnoses.
As with everything getting him help took longer than expected. We started with seeking occupational therapy but they didn’t have any times available and we moved on to the medication. That required an additional appointment, but he has now started on his medication and it has been good so far. He still has tons of energy, is as inquisitive as ever, and nothing of his personality has changed. Most importantly he does seem better able to focus.
The real test will be when he goes back to school on Wednesday. November is a weird month for schools. There isn’t a whole week this month that the kids are in school. They have off this Monday and Tuesday for the election, next Tuesday for Veterans’ Day, and then it is Thanksgiving. Lots and lots of time off.
Hopefully it all helps him. He can start concentrating in school and the real him will shine through. Windsor has always been different one on one. When I have seen him in his school setting he has been friendly and outgoing with lots of friends saying hello to him. He is good and he is smart, and now I hope the world gets to see it.
