When it comes to religion we tend to focus on the rules. The dos and don’ts of that belief system. People get so caught up in the rules they elevate some of them above the core beliefs of the religion.
One of the recurring themes of the Bible and other religious texts is letting go. The world isn’t in your control. It is out of your control. Don’t worry about it. Do the lilies of the field or the birds of the air worry as Jesus would say.
Not worrying about what you can’t control is at the heart of not judging your neighbor as well as not borrowing worries from the future. So much of our life is out of our control. Realizing this and letting go is the first step in finding peace in this life.
Yesterday I woke up and decided I was going to push the bank and I pushed. I told them we needed to get this done today. That I was tired of the delays and it was time to wrap this up. They pushed back a little that we had a very thorough underwriter and I pushed back that that underwriter has a boss that wouldn’t be happy if he cost the bank money.
Think about this. I make every monthly payment that they are taking off my hands. The total monthly payment of the loan is a quarter of what we’re paying now. Over the course of the loan we’re going to pay back double the principle and on top of that the bank is going to take this loan and package it with other loans and sell it as a bond or an MBS.
Isn’t a guaranteed payer and a decent return on the initial loan exactly what the banks want? It makes good business sense to approve my loan rather than coming back time and time again to ask me for more and more and more supporting evidence to show that I can park in my driveway or that we don’t have a car we don’t have or that I continued to make all my monthly payments while working on this loan.
All of this is out of my control. As of right now the loan closing is set for next Tuesday and I am going to push not to change it. I may not be able to control what the underwriter does, and if good business doesn’t motivate them then maybe time will. Make it clear it is time to put-up or shut-up.
