I was about to write that this is just another morning, but it isn’t. Today I have to deal with Cox. I am trying to lower the cable bill that my mother and sister have and don’t fully use. My father loved having the best option for everything. In most cases the middle option is the best one, and in today’s marketplace cable is a really not so good expense.
When you take the phone and internet out of the bill the total cable bill is around $350. This includes all the set box rentals and add-ons, and a lot of the add-ons are doubled up by streaming service subscriptions.
On the flipside of this I am paying under $70 a month for Direct TV’s streaming service. I can watch it on every TV with no equipment and on my phone, tablet, and computer if I want. I get the same channel line-up as they do without a bunch of extra fees.
This is where we are and what I am trying to do today. At some point I am going to go to the Cox Solutions store because trying to call Cox on the phone or use their chat bot is beyond frustrating. I tried to call yesterday and got a bit of a run around and then they tried to sell me a cell-phone plan.
At a certain point it feels like cable TV is elder fraud. Think about it for a second. The only reason my mother and sister don’t want to switch off of cable is because they know how to use it and are worried they wouldn’t know how to use streaming TV. Which is why I like Direct TV. When it gave me the option to do channels by channel number or alphabetical I jumped at the chance for it to work like traditional TV.
It is just wild to me that cable is competing with services offering the same or better channel line-ups for a third of the price and they’re not lowering their prices. Cable continues to get more and more and more expensive. I don’t even know what the justification is at this point.
There is value in my mother understanding how the cable works. I am paying for channels and services they do not use. I do not understand why this is a difficult thing to understand over the phone or typed out to a chat bot. If we can knock $100 off the bill I will be happy. Otherwise I will knock $350 off the bill and schedule a service call to come get their cable boxes, and help my mother and sister get set-up on Direct TV.
