Travel Time

We are headed out of town this weekend. It used to be a near yearly tradition for us to go up to Maryland around this time of year. I remember listening to the baseball news while driving on the back roads of Carroll County. Roads like Clemsonville Rd, Venomous Snake Gulch, Judge Branson Rd, and Fish Hatchery Rd. All exciting and interesting names.

This year we’re reviving the tradition and heading up there. It is going to be an interesting trip as it is just for one night. The kids have school on Monday and have yet to miss a day of school. That means the pressure mounts for them to never miss a day of school. They got perfect attendance last season and are on their way to doing it again.

I like the area we are travelling to. Southern Pa/Northern Md is an interesting place full of history, culture, and country cooking. I explained briefly once the different between Southern cooking and Country cooking and still don’t understand it myself. It is the difference between hominy and grits or scrapple and chitlins. It is a subtle difference that is hard to understand and explain. Either way there’s going to be fried chicken on the menu.

We aren’t going long and we aren’t going to have fun. The kids want to see their grandparents and my wife wants to see her family, and I want to get a good breakfast and stop at Sheetz on the way up. I am still disappointed about the lack of spicy mozzarella sticks but I can deal.

Who knows? Maybe it will be just like old times and a baseball trade or two will happen while we are up there. It was driving on the back roads of Carroll County where I learned that Cliff Lee had been traded to the Phillies. Hoping the news this time is better than that, and our weekend getaway isn’t a stress filled disaster.
