It was a fitting finally yesterday. I went to pick up the checks from the refinance and it turned out I was too early. By afternoon they meant afternoon and not after noon. So, when I showed up at 12:01 PM I was a little early. It was ok. I simply reversed my order of operations and went to visit my mom before delivering the checks.
Now we get into the issues. After I picked up the checks I needed to take them to what banks I could. The title company offered to overnight the car payoffs so that was one stop off my list. The first issue occurred when I attempted to enter the Chase bank on Virginia Beach Boulevard. That issue was very simply. That branch hadn’t opened yet and would do so on the 16th.
With that out of the way I headed off to the next closest Chase branch. Which happened to be 15 minutes away, but in the wrong direction from home. I do have to say that the Chase bank branches are very fancy. We think of Chase as more of an investment and credit card bank than a regular bank, but the branches are a cross between and dance club and a bank and it oddly works.
Here was the next issue. After getting the first two payments taken care of the third one hit a snag. That was that the lender had given the wrong amount for the payoff on one of the credit cards. The check had to follow The Price is Right rules. It couldn’t be over. I left the bank and called the title company. They cut me a new check for the correct amount but now I had to pick it up, and returning to that bank proved to be too much, but we’ll get to that.
Next I stopped at Wells Fargo with two more payoffs and our deposit. There were no issues with the payoffs here. I did warn the lender that I thought some of their numbers were off as they were going by older statements since they kept delaying the approval on the loan.
There were again no issues with the first two items on the agenda. It was the third, again, that gave trouble. That was our deposit. They couldn’t deposit it in my wife and I’s checking account because my mother’s name is stuck to it. While it has mostly been a nuisance in my life it has never been that impactful. The issue is my mother opened the account, for me, when I was ten or eleven at First Virginia Bank.
It has carried over that way through several mergers and name changes and remains on my bank account. The process to get it removed involved getting my mother to a bank branch and she never wanted to do that, and it hasn’t been such a bad thing this year. It makes paying her bills and dealing with her affairs that much easier.
At first I thought they ended up putting the check into my mother’s savings account because that is the only account I think of as a savings account. However it ended up in an old Way 2 Save account which Wachovia had in their dying days. It was a great account that paid 5% interest a month and saved one dollar for every debit card or online purchase.
In its current form the account is basically useless, and when they mentioned a savings account I was highly confused as, in my mind, there is no savings account with Lara and David’s names on it.
After that I was finished. I drove back to the title company. Picked up the final checks and drove home. From there I stuffed the envelopes with the rest of the checks and went to the post office to beat the 5:00 PM pick-up.
With that done. I was done, and it was time to relax at home. The only issue was the kids were now home and there was no relaxing to be had.
