Both yesterday and the start to this morning felt much needed. We talk a lot about slowing down and taking it easy but we rarely do. The last few weeks (months) have been extra busy, and this weekend we mostly stayed at home. We did run up to Williamsburg for a bit, but then it was time to be at home.
Outside of church yesterday we did a bunch of nothing. We had to keep the kids from going completely nuts at certain points. Telling them they had to clean up all their other toys before getting a new one out, but other than that we were at home and relaxed.
I’ve asked the kids many times why they can’t be still and relaxed. They’re always moving. I remember getting to the age of 13 or 14 and regretting that I didn’t run more when I had that kid energy. It would have been a great time to start a cardio routine. Give that endless energy somewhere to go.
I’m a little worried about winter break. Last year we went up to a state park and had a good time walking around an old farm, but this year I don’t know what we’re going to do. My priority today is finishing Christmas shopping.
That brings us to this morning. After getting a lot of relaxing in yesterday I started this morning off remembering why old couches are good and maybe my choice of couches for the den wasn’t the best.
I looked in the front room and my wife was sitting on the couch watching TV and looking pretty. The glow of the tv and Christmas lights on her skin was perfect. Like moonlight on marble. I had to sit next to her. I felt that pull, and it was nice. Really nice. Like putting on a comfortable sweater.
We forget so often to just be. There is pleasure in existence. So much of our lives are about getting to the next thing. We need to get through the new year so we can get to Valentine’s Day and so on and so forth.
There are things we are going to have to do. There is lots of activity on the horizon, but that doesn’t mean we need to rush towards it, rush through it, and rush onto the next busy time. Slowing down is good for us, and slowing down an simply existing with people you love is the best time of all.
