The Fate of the Recliner

My son might be a little too much like me when I was little. I remember slamming into my father’s recliner to get it to recline and now he has been slamming into mine to do the same. The unfortunate consequences is now my recliner makes some disturbing groaning noises when I recline it. The cat has also turned it into a scratching post and the kids have drawn on it a bit.

The true tragedy is when I was in the furniture store looking for a couch I asked about the recliner and learned that it is a discontinued model. The means that when this recliner goes that is it. No more comfort. I will have to search long and hard and high and low for a brand new design as well as a new recliner. It is going to be a long journey.

What worries me is that day might be coming sooner rather than later. Those moans and groans the recliner makes when trying to recline it worry me. They worry me a lot, and the cat and the kids won’t leave it alone.

Last night the boy was slamming into it to recline it and then tugging on the arm of it trying to launch himself or something. I have no idea what he was doing. With his personality when I asked him to stop because he was damaging the chair he immediately stopped. Which was good. Hopefully we can keep things where they are for a bit. It isn’t my desire to go out and get a new recliner anytime soon. Really, what is the point with the kids and cat still around.

The best case scenario is that the recliner last until the kids are in college and then it will be safe to order a new one. The sad reality is that with it already making troubling sounds a new one is much closer in the future than I would like. It is bad though because this one has been so good. I enjoy its comfort and everything about it.

When the time comes to say goodbye I will miss it, and when that time comes we are going to take our time to find a good replacement.
