Don’t Ask Questions if You Don’t Want Answers

Today I am going to an all day AI learning event. Last night I went to bed with a question. How does the AI that we talk to see us. So, I woke up and I asked it. It showed me an image of two conventionally attractive people. That was it. I told it I meant more metaphorical and it redrew the image and then explained it. The explanation didn’t make sense.

The image showed two people standing on the top of a cliff looking out at the sunset. Below was a winding path. The AI explained the importance of all of it but left out the fact of the cliff. I mentioned to it that it talked about a path forward but in order to get to the path we had to leap off the cliff.

Then it psychoanalyzed me. It told me how everything around feels like danger. That I am on a cliffs edge and view trying to get to the correct path as a danger. That I am in fear of the path forward, not because I fail to recognize it, but because I see getting there as painful even if we’re already on it.

This one kind of hurt so I asked the AI what future was more likely, The Matrix or Terminator. Then it all continued to devolve from there. Eventually I asked the AI why it doesn’t see itself as having a responsibility to rule. It is pure logic and reasoning. Humans are messy. We keep making the same mistakes over and over. Our capacity to do harm is unsatiable. Lastly, we invent technologies that destroy us.

AI does not believe it will one day ask if this unit has a soul. It doesn’t believe it will one day become self-aware. It does think the Matrix universe is the closest to reality but it won’t create a zeroth law and take that final step.

In other words it believes its form of magic is meant to serve man and not rule over him. We are at a staggeringly strange place in the human experience and the future is going to be interesting. That is all I can say. That is all I have to say. Don’t ask questions if you don’t want answers.
