Winter Weather Reactions

The is something strange about all the people from the north of this country deriding people that aren’t for when they get snow or winter weather events. You never hear a person from Oklahoma bad mouthing locals when an unexpected tornado hits or a person from Arizona shrugging off 100 degree heat, but drop snow on the southern US and you betcha someone from the Upper Mid-West or Northeast is going to be on you about it.

It isn’t that the southern US doesn’t know what snow is it is that it is such a rare occurrence that localities aren’t prepared, and so few people are capable of understanding rationality and nuance. I was talking with someone the other day how reactions to winter weather in this area range from the completely oblivious to the crazy lock themselves in home with very little middle ground.

I hate driving in this area in the snow for these very reasons. Last time I had to I saw both extremes almost immediately. I didn’t even get out of the neighborhood before I was stuck behind someone driving 5 mph and not understanding the importance of momentum. Then when I hit the main road I was immediately greeted by a truck roaring down the street at 20 mph over the posted speed limit and fishtailing all the way.

Those two weren’t even the worst part. It was the third person I saw that had me raising my hands in the year and exclaiming, “It is you! The King of the Morons,” because this dolt was walking right down the center of the main road. You know the one where the truck had just bolted down going 65 with barely an ounce of control.

That is why I hate driving in this area when it snows. It isn’t because of the snow it is because there is one idiot going 5 mph, another idiot going 65, and their king walking around like he’s on a nice Sunday stroll down the center lane of a main throughway.

It’s like my mom used to tell me, “It’s not you I worry about. It is everyone else.” It is people like this that really bring that statement to life. I mean we are talking about people that can’t understand a simple roundabout when it is 75 and sunny. What are they going to do when snow is falling? Suddenly get smart?
