The idea of velocitization has always intrigued me. It is a psychological force I have felt myself. You get off the highway after driving for 65 mph and are suddenly expected to go 35 and it feels slow. Really slow.
One of the issues people have raised with AI is that it makes people dumber, and I feel that, but more in the same way that velocitization feels. I use Chat for a work project, finish it, and go back to isolated thinking mechanics and it feels slow. Chat might not always be giving me what I want or being much more than an intern, but it is another thing thinking with me. I am bouncing ideas off of it and creating new ideas. It is like unlocking the power of always having someone available for a brainstorming session.
It is also still early in the morning, I slept in too much, and I haven’t finished my coffee. My thinking is always slower in the morning while the machine boots up, and for this blog I refuse to open Chat. This is my place. This is my journal. This is where we respect the purity of thought. There is a time and a place for everything.
AI will make people dumber. It will work like alcohol. It is amplify what it already there. I enjoy creativity and the creative process. So, it takes me just as long in Chat to write a blog post as if I wrote one myself. The process is different and the end product is much more polished because each step goes faster. In order to help the world and slow down the amount of lazy AI writing here is a good process.
Write a blog post (yourself), then put it into Chat to get its edits, tell it to red team those edits specifically focused on clarity, consistency of tone, tense, POV, and removing AI speak like over use of the word quietly, this is not statements, and em-dashes. Now either open canvas mode and do a paragraph by paragraph edit or do my preferred method and tell it to just give you one paragraph at a time. Once that is done have it read through the entire thing double checking for consistency and flow. Once that is done and you have read through it yourself and gotten it to a point you like ask it to give you the prompt you would have needed to get that result from the beginning. Create a project and copy and paste this prompt into the instructions. That is all.
AI isn’t going to dumb us down. It is going to widen the intelligence and talent gap, because there are going to be people using it as a human led tool and others using it as a replacement for themselves. The “winners” of this emerging tech will be those that treat it as a tool and keep themselves in the drivers seat. They will just have to get used to the speed changing coming off the highway of ideas.
