It has been an interesting last couple of days. I have been working on a few different projects plus having to work in the field yesterday. After a weird week that gave me both a cognitively heavy day and a weird type of creative discharge day I needed a slower day yesterday and instead I continued accelerating. It didn’t feel as loaded as those other two days, but today I need to really focus on not doing too much and also not forgetting that I signed up for a church outing this evening.
The future of this world is interesting. I was thinking about how my generation are thought of as digital natives. I remember when a friend of mine first got Prodigy home internet and soon after that we had internet in our home. I wasn’t much older than the boys at that time and no one new that this was the beginning of a brave new world.
I remember using it to watch famous speeches and to listen to classical music and soon after it was everywhere. It was a foreign concept to most people for much of the time I was in high school. It wasn’t used for research or to write papers and even when I was in college site your sources strictly forbade internet use. It wasn’t until Wikipedia came out that internet research achieved wide acceptance. Even now people will question where did you get that information, and they should. Trust but verify is a human tool we shouldn’t lose.
That brings me to my thought. I grew up digitally aware. I learned to type on a typewriter and was micro dosed on the construction of the information super highway. Then suddenly all that information appeared in the palm of my hand, and now there is a ghost in the machine that I can ask to codify and deliver the information to me formatted in a way I understand. What will happen in my children’s live?
The world is stepping into a new river. We’ve never been here before and the speed of ideas will only accelerate with time. The innovations my children see in their lifetime will be remarkable. If we thought the internet was a superhighway then AI is a bullet train or the concord jet or some form of travel we’ve only seen in sci-fi TV shows or movies, and our children are going to be the first natives of this strange new world.
