I stepped in it this morning. I don’t even know what lead to the thought. All I know was one minute I was laying next to my beautiful wife then suddenly a daughter child invaded the bed and before I knew it I was tinkering again. This time the thought that lead to it was contact forms are out, what’s in, and the internet told me that it was chat boxes. We have a chat box. No one has ever once used it which is funny because when we had a Wix website that chat box was used.
We’ve been in business long enough to see the world change dramatically and what felt like ahead ten years ago now feels like behind. The website might not matter that much anymore. Zero click behavior is continuing to rise and most callers or people messaging us likely don’t even make it to the website. Honestly, I don’t make it to websites all that often either. Everything you need to contact them is right there on their Google profile.
I will say my one big frustration is that Google trying to tell you a restaurants menu is awful. That is why I might go onto a website. I want to see an up to date menu and I hate it when I can’t or the process of viewing an online menu is the same as starting an online order. I just want to know what options are available and I want it to be easy to find. That always begs a question in my mind. Is my website functioning the way I would like.
It is hard to strip away our own biases. I have spent the last month tidying up our website and sometimes I wonder if I have just added clutter. I added a decision matrix that terminates into pdf checklist, local city pages, and a view other things. It has been a lot of work and now it is time to stop. But I can’t. There is always one more thought, one more idea, one more thing to do to ease our clients experience.
Today final needs to mean final. I can likely add what I want in 2.5 seconds and then I am going to chop of my hands so I can’t touch the infernal website again for 30 days, and then I will only touch it if GA4 says there is a reason to. Either because a certain part of the site is really popular or another is creating fiction. Right now I just want to see things work the way I want them to, and then means money raining from the sky.
