Work life balance is important for a lot of people, but when you own your own business that balance is far different. That is why driving up to Jamestown yesterday I had the thought that we have a cat care card on our website but no cat sitting page to link it to. Part of this thought was that Rover just bought Meowtel and I needed to build a fence around my search terms, but it was still a weird time to have the thought.
Then we went through the Jamestown visitors center and for reconstruction. The thought really started to take hold when the boys were chasing chickens through the fort and pretending that the pulpit in the old church was a castle.
After visiting Jamestown and doing the things I’ve been doing since I was the boys age we went to Yorktown to get a late lunch/early dinner. It was packed. We had shown up on market day and grabbed the last parking spot in the free garage.
We got to walk along the waterfront and the beach. The children were fixated on the beach despite living less than a mile from a large ocean beach. That made walking to the restaurant difficult. We decided on the Yorktown Pub because of the three I looked at it was the name I remembered and the one that didn’t offer pizza and since we aren’t eating pizza for Lent I figured that was the best bet.
It had a 30 minute wait but that was fine. Where were we going to go? I got the oystery sandwich and a slice of key lime pie. My wife knew I was going to order that when the waitress asked me about dessert, or at least it appeared she did as she was laughing at my reaction.
For a day it was pretty good. I should have come home and relax. I should have stopped thinking about the stinking cat sitting page until Monday. I worked hard for ten years to get my weekends back from a business that doesn’t want to give them up, and here I am giving myself work on the weekends.
The problem is I am enjoying myself. I’ve figured out what to do with my time and how to enjoy my business again. I really do need to read more. I am off any sort of expectable pace for reading and continued tinkering with the website isn’t going to help that.
