The Tax Man Cometh

I didn’t realize how close we were to taxes being due until I got a bill yesterday. That is a scary thing. All of a sudden receiving a large tax bill in your email. That isn’t a fun thing or something that you want to see. Especially when so much else has gone wrong with everything else. I am hoping that this is the last month where things are not firmly in the black, but I worry it won’t be.

The money I was going to us to pay taxes has instead gone to repairs on the rental properties and there has not been a steady cash flow from that business account. That is a small, but also major issue as I had planned on that being available, but you know what they say about best laid plans.

I hate to make a joke about taxes being taxing, but here we are. I was already under stress from so much else going wrong and then while working on what is going to be our employee scorecard realizing that, guess what, the employee we just let go may not have been if we were applying the metrics. She still might have because outside of simply showing up and doing the job I am including unexcused call outs and responsiveness on the scorecard.

That is the score card, visit arrival, visit completion, visit report quality, unexcused call outs, and responsiveness. So passing on the first three and failing the last two is cause for a conversation, but it might have been a different conversation if the scorecards were already in effect.

I believe I am going to get these finished up and to the staff by this coming Monday so they know what they are being scored on and let them know about the performance review at the end of June.

We have to make clear to people that this is to help them improve and to move up the payment tiers. At this point with how hiring is going I wouldn’t mind figuring out how to switch the company over to a straight hourly/on-call payment structure, or at least run the numbers to figure out what that would look like. Then make a Facebook recruiting ad and send that out to dog walkers in the area highlight our structure and set weekly hours.
