I recall when
the circus came to town.
Hoisting a tent of red and white
that we had to daily
navigate around
taking in the scents
of sweat and soiled straw.
The time of the circus is over.
We’re much too advanced
for tamed tigers and balancing elephants.
No matter the acrobats,
sword swallowers, fire eaters,
and clowns.
Sacrificed at the alter
of advancement
as a penance to our past.
