The Day of the Frozen Dawn

I keep being told and given evidence that we are in for a cold winter. I keep not believing at and being given more evidence. It is currently 27 degrees outside before the new year. In my ten years living in Virginia Beach there hasn’t been a month where you couldn’t wear short sleeves at least one day. This month might be the first.

It bodes poorly for the idea that we aren’t in for a cold winter. The latest evidence I have of this impending doom is that I left my laptop outside in my car last night, and it is borderline uncomfortable to type on right now. I mean it is cold.

It is frozen to the touch, the power cord was difficult to unwind, and even the keys feel slow this morning. It isn’t safe or wise to leave electronics in extreme temperatures, but I just forgot. Or mostly forgot. I knew it was out there after a time but didn’t want to go get it.

It keeps getting colder. I don’t know how low the temperatures are going to go this winter or if we are going to see a major snow fall or two. At this point I am counting nothing out.

I prefer a mild winter. Driving in the snow down here is an adventure and a half. Think about all the logic and reason and lessons of driving in the snow. The simple downshift over braking or keep it slow and steady. All those little bits of advice go out the window. The best thing to do here is stay indoors, because while you’re out their downshifting over braking and taking corners slow and steady there is someone that has never driven in snow coming 60 mph down the road right towards you, and I’m not up for that obstacle course.

With it being this cold we are planning an outdoor activity. We’re going up to Williamsburg to get our annual dosing of hot cider and ginger cakes. I enjoy being in Williamsburg and walking around. Hot apple cider and ginger cakes are two of my favorite parts of the holiday season.

The time with family isn’t too bad either. We have plenty of pictures of our kids climbing around Colonial Williamsburg. Today might have started as the day of the frozen dawn, but it is going to be a day of warm hearts and pleasant company.
