Empty Runway

Back before the summer began I set out to create a nice runway, and today is the day it has run out. I have a lot to get done today because everything is due today. I could have refreshed the runway or kept working on it, but I let it run out. Now it is time to buckle down and get to work.

It gives me direction today. I will treat it like a normal work day, because I have to. I will shut myself off for a couple hours leading up to when it is time to hit the ground running and then I will hit it. I will get everything I have to get done done.

It isn’t really that much. A couple Facebook posts, a blog, the current client newsletter, and then the regular Monday work. That is all. It is why I was able to get ahead, but then I didn’t realize how much was scheduled for July. We had our vacation and then volunteering at Vacation Bible School. This was the three week period I should have been protecting, and this week is the typical first week of the month with several meeting commitments.

I start off the week losing two office days while the runway has disappeared. I know I can get back on rhythm and schedule, and school starts in just a couple weeks. Then it will be back to the regular rhythm, but then we will also lose the time with family and it does feel like we haven’t done enough.

I did tell the kids we would go to the zoo this week and I also set up a bunch of interviews for Tuesday and Thursday which are the easiest days for us to get to the zoo. That now means we are either going today or Friday, and with the workload I have today that is unlikely.

I kind of miss when the kids were in pre-school. It gave us a couple hours during the day and our time with them. There are a few local private schools that claim half-day education is what is best for children, but I am not in the mode of spending money on school. Plus I have my Northern Virginia mindset that private schools are for those that can’t hack it in public school.

Either way there is both not enough time before the kids go back to school and too much, and no matter what I need to get this work done.
