When Did I Get So Old

I was going to wear my Nick Johnson jersey that I got all the way back in 2005. Then I put it on and it wasn’t all that comfortable. I normally would wear a t-shirt under it but we’ve got a long drive ahead and I don’t want to wear two layers in a DC summer.

Then there is the second order effect. My thinking about how many people at the park today will even know who Nick Johnson is. There are probably a lot of people there that won’t even remember Lastings Milledge or Felipe Lopez either, and my heart weeps for the people who have no knowledge of Logan Kensing, Daryl Ward, or Brian Bixler.

This is a recurring theme for me this year. I was looking for Smurfs in the line for Rapterra at Kings Dominion and talking about the monorail at Busch Gardens. The days I lived and loved have past me by and it happened a lot faster than I thought it would.

More and more I am ending up at places where I am no longer below or at the average age and well above the median age. That’s what happens when you’re an older millennial I guess. For the last twenty years we’ve been the cursed youth of America and now we’re suddenly in our mid-40s.

It is kind of scary to look back on the past and realize less and less people remember it. I could always wear my Matt Chico jersey, but that would be too obscure even for me. Instead I am wearing a comfy 2019 NL Champs t-shirt. It will do well in the DC heat and won’t mind if some Ben’s chili gets on it.

My wife is upset about the lack of Hard Times nachos at the ballpark and she decided to wear her Jayson Werth jersey because our daughter stole the Zimmerman and the Austin Kearns might have also been too obscure. Though there would be something funny about a husband and wife wearing Nick Johnson and Austin Kearns jerseys to the park.
