I Have to Talk About Whalefall

When I went to see The Odyssey the other day one of the weirdest trailers I watched was for a movie called Whalefall. The trailer is simply a diver getting caught up in a sperm whale’s fight with a giant squid and being eaten. It is based on a book and the diver is given one hour to live. The entire thing seems impossible and is in insane idea for a movie.

I have to admit I have never watched a survival movie. Not Gravity or Fall or the one where the guy is trapped by rocks and chews his arm off. I have seen none of them and don’t really have an interest to. It doesn’t sound like a great movie concept. It sounds very anxiety inducing to be honest.

Watching the trailer for Whalefall made me feel uncomfortable in and of itself. I can’t imagine what I would do in that situation. Probably give up and hope no one finds out how I died. A trailer watching a person get eaten by a whale is not comforting and I don’t think whales can eat people. There is some debate online but no answer and as long as AI keeps using Reddit as a source we aren’t going to know.

AI needs to work with an encyclopedia company so we can have some real answers on this or the technology is going to have trouble replacing common search. Which begs another question. Is AI going to continue the widening of the intelligence gap in society?

I feel that I am of slightly below average intelligence. I have no advanced degree or a job that requires any level of thinking or skill. In fact I have very little skills. I don’t even have the skills to be eaten by a whale because I don’t know how to scuba dive. That creates a lot of problems. I can never get a job the requires me to be eaten by a whale.

The is the most insane concept anyone could think of for a movie, and every time I mention it people say, “Maybe it’s like Jonah.” Jonah wasn’t randomly eaten by a whale. He was running from duty and God used a whale to make him face it. I also don’t think the Bible specifies whale and I don’t think many biblical scholars or theologians think the story is real.

Neither is this one. It isn’t based on true events but it is presented in a realistic manner. Having seen the trailer I have seen my version of the movie because what comes next is the diver being digested and that is an even worse movie than surviving. It is simply a pitch black screen with light gurgling sounds and the diver screaming as stomach acid melts his flesh from his bones. Roll credits.
