Compressing Time

Here we are. Morning again. Not just any morning. Friday morning. A good morning. The last morning of what we think of as the week. Then we enter the liminal space of the weekend. What happens then? I do not know. I never know. I make it my business not to know.

Someone asked me yesterday if I had any plans this weekend and I answered no. I quickly amended it to yes but included that they aren’t my plans. That I am not the one that made the plans. I only follow along like a lost little dog.

The first planned event is tonight. A ghost walk in Hampton Virginia. We need to account for tunnel traffic and make sure we are there in time. I am hoping we can do that. I have no idea. Like I said. I planned nothing. All I know is that it is Friday morning and we have a busy weekend. I think we do anyway.

The next big thing is a Lowe’s event. Something about making airplanes. I believe this are Halloween airplanes or they are no airplanes at all. It would be a little weird if something wasn’t Halloween themed this time of year.

An oyster roast is the final plan of this weekend. It is a great event that the church puts on for the men of the congregation or that the men’s group inside the church does. Don’t worry there is now a ladies group too. As you grow older you realize that shared spaces and time are excellent but we all need a little time apart too.

I do love me some oysters. I remember last year there was a Beach Day School fundraiser that had oysters and so few people were partaking. I felt bad for the workers and I got many plates of freshly shucked oysters, but not enough. I was still trying to maintain some decorum. I should have maintained less. The funniest part of all of it was the people really diving into the oysters were First Pres members as well as Beach Day parents. The other parents seemed to view not partaking as the proper social response to unlimited oysters.

That is a dynamic worth discussing another day. Our church community vs others and how the people in our church come across a lot more inclusive than some others, and, yes, partaking vigorously of AYCE oysters demonstrates that.
