Willful Ignorance

An alarming amount of people
are content to remain un-or-misinformed.
It should come as no surprise
in a society that shuns education and journalism.
The decrease in bookstores it turns out
was the canary in the coal mine.
Remember when every mall and shopping center
had a Crown, B. Dalton, Walden’s, or Borders,
and not to mention the countless
independent booksellers.
We’ve been casting off knowledge
longer than we’d like to admit.
Whoever wanted to be a nerd?
We’ve made a mockery of
that which keeps us safe.
Ignorance is bliss
was never meant to be
a call to action.
