The one area where people disagree with me a lot is being actively inactive. It has come up a couple times in the last few days. The first was explaining to someone how I worked by not working for the week. That all the SEO work I did was like planting a garden and once you get to a certain point you’re looking at soil until the sprouts start to appear. You don’t wait three days, dig up the tulips, and plant daisies. You wait for the tulips to grow.
A similar instance happened with a dog this week. Our staff made it sound like he was a terror. That he was charging them out of the crate and trying to rip them limb from limb. Their videos showed a young dog going into a play bow, jumping around, and wanting to get them moving. I told one of them to wait it out. Make it to the third visit and things would likely be golden, and guess what. They made it to their third visit and things were golden.
I now know that one of my tasks this week is to look into third party dog body language courses for my staff. There are numerous gaps in our training and we are hiring people from all different levels of experience. From people who have owned dogs their entire lives to people that have worked in the pet industry and can tell you why the former is going to have a lot of gaps.
The one area where I should listen to my own advice is in the real estate. I need to listen to my realtor and slow down. Get through the first deal before daydreaming on Zillow about the next one and the next one and the one after that. My goal is to build a base. To diversify the investments and balance cash flow and equity. The world moves at the pace of closing and that is 30 days at a time. Which to me feels like an eternity.
Then there is figuring out what is my personal vision for the future. Who am I and what do I want to be? Am I the head of the Huzzard family or do I want to figure out how to fade back into the background? I don’t do well in the background. The next part is where and how does everything fit together. I’d like to be in the future sitting in the lounge we own looking over my investments and entertaining future partners while on my way to one day being the majority partner in a sports franchise. That’s a lofty goal, but all big dreams start somewhere.
