My Brain Has a Mind of Its Own

Last night I told my wife that my brain has a mind of its own and has been showing me things all day. Some were things I wanted to see and others weren’t. I realized as soon as I had said it that it was a very odd thing to say, but I can’t visualize and have no internal monologue so the only images or ideas I get are the ones my brain brings me.

It is a weird way to talk about something that is a part of my body. It does bring up the question of do we have multiple selves that work together. Not like Inside Out where they are emotions but a thinking brain, a personality brain, and other section of the brain. I know each of these is represented by a part of the brain but is there more to it.

I wouldn’t know or be able to figure it out, but it does make me wonder something about the future we are headed toward. It goes back to a thought I had the other day when my son had to come home from church because his stomach hurt and I asked him how it hurt, because when this happens with him most of the time it is because he is hungry. Either way he couldn’t tell me other than he felt like he was going to throw-up. No imagine if you have mapped another person’s brain and can use that to feel what they feel. That could be helpful to doctors. Instead of asking patients to describe the pain they can feel it themselves.

It also brings up the question of if we can map our own minds can we separate the different parts and grow new brains from them. See what our personality would be like with a new knowledge base or find a better personality for our own knowledge. We could change parts of our brain like changing a wig. The implication of this is startling.

Then there is the Black Mirror episode where this reality exists and a woman is able to bring back her dead husband based on a personality map except it isn’t him. Imagine trying to regrow yourself from your base brain and ending up with a very angry robot coming for you.
