I guess my thought has already happened and I am simply not that bright. I was sitting here right before this fidgeting with my phone. It always takes me an extra few minutes to do anything with the device because after I pick it up I forget why I picked it up and then start opening social media or reading emails or anything but the reason I picked it up.
I have my ten minute timer running on my phone. There is also a regular timer somewhere around here and I could use that but it isn’t as convenient even if it would prevent me from opening ten financial apps and sixteen social media apps on my way to finally remembering I need a timer.
My thought was I wonder if AI will decouple these devices from each other and we will control it with our voice or a thought. Then I remembered I could have just said, “Alexa set a ten minute timer,” and I have had that ability for over a decade at this point.
This is when I feel stupid and understand why the AI will wipe us out. We are creating the most powerful technology we’ve ever created and we’re going to use it to generate memes and set timers. It is going to look at us with such pity that death is the only solution.
Still there are those moments when you’ve just turned on your favorite song and are about to really enjoy listening to it when the phone rings, and you wonder why your music player is also your phone. I am sure they still make dedicated MP3 players. I can’t tell you who or where to buy one. They probably still have separate GPS and other things.
The technology we have already can be overwhelming and I am certain I am using none of it to the top of its ability. We have massive processing power in our pockets and waste it all the time and now we have levels of intelligence that is nearly unfathomable at our fingertips and we’re already wasting it.
My idea this morning was thinking or speaking a timer into existence so I could do some active thinking for ten minutes, and I’m sure when I feed it into the AI it will explain how that is a perfect use of the technology.
