Settling In

I am tired of the cold weather. We had a brief respite of 70 degree days before the temperature crashed back into the 50’s and it hasn’t recovered since. It is frustrating. I’ve normally had at least one beach day by now and not to mention getting to go to Busch Gardens for the food and wine festival. The weather is constraining everything.

We could still go outside but it was raining yesterday and looks like rain again today. It isn’t a pleasant or fun time to go out in the rain. I do not enjoy it and it makes the 50 degree weather feel colder. It is working against us.

I don’t mind staying inside. There is a lot I need to catch up on. I have gone the longest in a long time without picking up a new book to read, and I have plenty. The one thing I am not going to do is to touch the company website or try and make things happen with the other business. I need to let things settle.

There isn’t that much different between rattling the foundation of SEO and reallocating assets in real estate deals. Right now the issue with the family businesses and investments is each one is being asked to do a little too much, or maybe the investments are the perfect metaphor for everything.

Here we have the regular investment account which was set to be 100% income producing when I took it over and I turned it from that to 80/20 growth and income. The idea behind that was since it shrunk to pay off debt the difference in income wasn’t great enough to outweigh the growth potential, and that account has done well, and might be exactly how I have approached everything.

The real estate investment system was the opposite in a way. Homes in Croatan, Shadowlawn, and one small office condo being used for storage. The first thing I did was clean out the office condo and get it rented, then we took the house in Shadowlawn and turned it into a different residential property and another office condo and turned $2500 a month in rent into $4500 in rent with $1000 extra a month in expenses to pay back $100K drawn on a line of credit against the investments. Now I am in the midst of doing another 1031 with our family beach house and turning $3000 a month into $6000 to $8000 a month in rent plus some land to buy and hold for future development or sale.

That is a lot like SEO as I need to let those first layers settle before making anymore moves, and just like with the SEO I didn’t do that.
