The original plan for Father’s Day weekend was to run up to Northern Virginia and spend some time where I grew up. That changed due to financial concerns as tax bills kept piling up and the bank account continued to head in the wrong direction. The biggest issue was my own fear. I focused on the money going out and not what was coming in. The account has no recovered and I am on the verge of creating something that could be truly special.
That wasn’t enough to keep the plan when several birthday invites for the same day arrived. I decided it was more important that my kids have fun here instead of going on a tour of my childhood. You know they should experience their own instead of me trying to show them mine.
It would have been fun and they would have enjoyed it. The Lego Discovery Center or Zone was on the agenda and then perhaps some mini golf at Lake Accotink. That would have been our Saturday and then we would have headed for Kings Dominion on Sunday and back home. With birthdays galore and myself not yet getting to ride Verbolten Forbidden Turn we shifted our plans to staying local and going to Busch Gardens.
It isn’t that big of an issue. I can look at the August calendar and find a weekend when the Nationals are in town and create an even more fun weekend experience for the kids. The biggest thing is to create fun memories for them.
There is no way to know if yesterday did that. Roland has started to ride more rides and despite starting the day incredibly grumpy Windsor found a ride he liked and rode it a billion times in a row before riding the scrambler with his brother and I.
It was a good Father’s day. The only downside is Abigail wasn’t allowed to ride Roman Rapids because she refused to wear anything but a bathing suit and they ride attendant wouldn’t let her on without shorts. The boys didn’t want to get on because they’ve ridden it before and for some reason recall it as scary. Yet Roland now wants to ride Escape from Pompeii over and over again.
When it comes down to it it was an excellent Father’s Day because it was spent with my family and I got to watch the kids have fun.
