Maximum Exhaustion

Vacation Bible School doesn’t sound like that much work. I walk from class to class with a group of 15 4-6 year old’s and sometimes get to sit down for around three hours. It is a lot less work than working as a lumberjack or a coal miner, and yet after two days I was ready to pass out at night and slept in this morning. I do not understand it.

It makes me wonder how badly I need to get back to a gym routine or if this is just what it is like getting older or if there is some hidden element I am not accounting for. It doesn’t feel like it should be this difficult, and yet every year it feels this difficult. There is also the element of work. I am not sure what is getting done and I feel out of touch with our business.

Vacation Bible School coming so close on the heels of vacation and with a critical need to hire in three weeks it also is not a great time to be out of action for a week. The work I have to do is mostly at a computer and it should be easy to get done. The good news is when those three weeks are up my kids will be back in school and our lives will return to a predictable routine.

It is all about surviving. We just need to make it through the next couple weeks. If we can do that then things will get a lot easier. It will be so much easier to deal with balancing work and life when they become more scheduled. With the kids home from school I feel both the weight of missing obligations and a race against the clock to get all our activities in.

We’ve been to Busch Gardens twice, the water park two or three times, Kings Dominion, and Hersheypark and yet it feels like we’re not getting enough out of the memberships we have to Busch Gardens and the water park. We haven’t even made it to Water Country USA or the beach, and the beach is less than a mile away.

Part of the issue with that latter one is the weather went from freezing to boiling in June. We skipped past any level of comfort. The kids have also been asking for more varied activities. They would like to go to The Children’s Museum in Portsmouth at some point and we went to Yorktown this past weekend. All while we also hold memberships we aren’t using to the aquarium and zoo. Maybe it was easier to do these activities when they were younger. I have no idea, but the summer is rapidly coming to an end and it feels like we’re letting it go by too fast.
