I almost drove my car this morning. I was so close to doing it. I was going to go walk the neighbor’s dog I’m caring for and then go to the Parlor Donut. Instead I decided to walk about not get donuts. The healthier choice.
Also the wrong choice, and while some might say it is only in hindsight that I know this, and while that might be true, it is out of ignorance that I regret it. You see the odds were against me as soon as I stepped outside, because I never looked at the weather. I deemed it to be the gray of dusk and not the gray of cloud cover, and therefore I never checked the weather.
In my mind there was no reality in which it rains. I had no knowledge of rain. You might tell me that this doesn’t change my odds and you’re right and wrong. It doesn’t change the odds themselves and we’re not trying to stop the rain nor predict it, but the knowledge of the possibility of rain would have had a chance to alter my behavior.
I didn’t mind getting rained on that much. Right now I am a little itchy so I mind that, but the getting rained on itself wasn’t so bad, and the walk to the house and with the dog didn’t involve the rain. That came afterwards. I could have texted or called my wife and asked for rescue but I didn’t want to.
I miss walking. It is a great time to explore the latest thoughts. I should maybe just start walking in the mornings. With or without a dog. I don’t need no dog to walk. I got two legs of my own. Someone asked me a bit ago why I liked pet sitting and it’s just good, man. I get to drive around listening to books on tape and then I can walk and be alone with my thoughts. In the rhythm of one foot after the other.
This job is a great time to expand your mind. Don’t know how that would translate into the company’s core purpose, but it is how I feel about it. I get a little better every time I do it, and I am starting to think I am ready for the other side of my company exit. Where I can stop doing office work and start walking dogs.
