It is funny to think about this for a second. I started this journal because of my 2025 star word, cheer, and this year my star word was purpose and I have rarely written about that. Yesterday I started reading Start With Why for a business book club and it was always a book I thought I would be cynical about, and for a bit I was. Yesterday I was thinking maybe my why is how. That I like to tinker and learn through trial and error and that ultimately is my purpose. To learn. Then the author defined what he meant by why, and something clicked.
Earlier this year I was trying to define the main purpose of Stable Hands and what I finally came up with was, “We Make Pets Possible,” no one outside of myself liked it or understood it, and that confused me. Then while listening to this book something clicked. What I really mean by that is, “Pets are for Everyone,” that a busy life doesn’t have to stand in the way of enjoying the love of a pet at home. That even the busiest person should be able to come home to the love of a pet, and our midday dog walking and vacation pet sitting facilitate that.
That was a nice moment. A book I thought I would loathe and be cynical about gave me a key insight. What I did with this information is start to research the author to see how closely he fit into the intellectual ecosystem I keep finding myself in. The same authors keep referencing each other in the books I read and the mindset vs practical business books breakdown might not be so clean.
I wrote too big of paragraphs above and this timer might go off before I can get to a fifth one. I am also out of things to say this morning and this might be my last paragraph of the morning. Either way a book I thought I wouldn’t like gave me real insight and I am excited to see what I can do with that.
